While most people look forward to the next corporate event, there are some that have a fear of them and find it hard to engage with new people. If you find that you’re in this category and are having a hard time networking at events, here are 4 steps you can take to make the whole process much easier.
- Be Confident
Tap into your inner confidence to help start up conversations with others and dress appropriately to let your personality and your character shine through. Have some business cards on hand and share them with others following a conversation. Try to display as much confidence as possible since this is the one attribute that people will notice most when meeting you at events.
- Find out Who Will Be There
It will be a confidence boost to find out who is going to be at the event. This way you’ll know ahead of time what you’ll be walking into and can plan ahead for it. The more information you know the more you can plan for the event and be ready for it. You can even look at the social media platforms of the people that will be attending so that you can get a heads up regarding the type of conversations to have with them.
- Go Ahead and Sit down with Others
Don’t be afraid to sit down at a table where others are relaxing and then get engaged in the conversation. Once you make the move to sit down and mingle, you’ll find it easy to get involved with the topics being discussed. Find out where the cafeteria or bar is and make your move there. This is the place where people will be easily approachable since they will be more relaxed while drinking or eating.
- Collect Business Cards
When you meet other people at an event that you want to connect with, ask for a business card if they don’t offer one. Then, take a moment to discreetly write down a few words about this person so that you can put the face to the name later. This may be an important contact for you down the line and one that you’ll need to remember. You should also have a special place to put the most important cards you collect since you may end up with a bunch of cards – especially at a large event.
You can make an event work to your advantage when you are willing to step out of your comfort zone for a short amount of time. Once you have done this a few times, it will be easier to do in the future. Be willing to confront your fears and promote your abilities at events. You never know who you’re going to meet and how they could possibly shape your future.
